Physical And Cognitive Development In Early Adulthood

In this essay, I take up physical and cognitive sides of early adulthood, which is the period of the twenties and thirties. Let us reminder ourselves that early adult years are hard to divide into separate entities, since the timing of important milestones varies highly among individuals . However, for the majority of people this period involves departing from parent’s house, getting higher education, finding a full-time work, getting financial security, establishing a long-term intimate relationship .

During early adulthood, the process of senescence begins and from there onwards the functioning of the organs and system starts to decline in all members of our species, however, individual variations are great. Those variations are affected by the person’s unique genetic gifts, lifestyle, living environment and historic period of early childhood and adolescence .

During the period of time, physical appearance changes and decline in body functioning comes into play. Later on, these changes will accelerate. The chronic diseases which are related to cardiovascular and respiratory systems have their origins in early adulthood. After the attainment of the maturity these bodily systems start functioning at the optimal level. In healthy individuals, the ability of heart to meet the body’s oxygen demand under normal conditions does not change under normal conditions. However, under the stressful conditions during exercise, the performance of the heart declines with age . These changes are caused by the decrease in heart’s capacity to maintain a higher rate of heartbeat because of the greater stiffness of cardiac tissue.

Therefore, heart has difficulty delivering required oxygen to the body during exercise. Like the heart, functionality of the lungs show age related changes at rest. As one grow older respiratory volumes decrease and breathing rate increases. The efficiency of lung capacity declines by 10 percent per decade after twenty-five years of age.

Let us see how does cognition change with the transition to adulthood? Psychologists have studied this question from three vantage points. First, they have suggested that there has been progressive transformation of the structure of thoughts which includes novel qualitatively separate ways of thinking as one develops from the cognitive level of adolescence. Secondly, early adulthood is a time of gaining higher education and specialize in a distinct area. This achievement have important consequences as how does an individual processes information. In conclusion, the physical and cognitive developmental milestone that an individual attains during early adulthood are no less remarkable than those which he had gained during adolescence.
