Step-By-Step Tutorial On How To Compose A Personal Essay In 20 Minutes

It can happen to the best of us. No matter how much we prepare or plan to write an assignment over the course of several days, we leave until the last minute and as a result are forced to compose something in a matter of minutes. If this is the situation you find yourself in upon writing a personal essay in 20 minutes, then we don’t have to tell you that time is of the essence. Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting it done:

  • Step 1) 3 minutes, select your best topic option
  • The first three minutes should be spent going over your best personal essay options. Don’t choose anything that is overwhelmingly compelling. Select the topic option that is the easiest to write about. Brainstorm a few ideas as you do this as this will provide you with some content to get started on and with which to develop your assignment outline.

  • Step 2) 2 minutes, create an essay outline
  • Now take whatever brainstorming notes you wrote down and organize them quickly into a simple outline. You’re not going to be able to discuss everything that came to mind, but you should certainly address everything that comes up in the assignment prompt. List your responses to each component with simple phrases, spending no more than two minutes.

  • Step 3) 10 minutes, write your first draft
  • Refer to your essay outline frequently and try your best to stay on track. Usually a personal essay is only a few hundred words, so it’s quite possible to write a really good first draft in just ten minutes. Try not to think too much about finding the right word. Just get down all of your ideas as the pop into your head. You’ll have a few minutes to make corrections, so for now just write, write, write.

  • Step 4) 5 minutes, revise, edit and proofread
  • Finally, spend the last five minutes of your time revising, editing and proofreading. You generally want to do each of these separately and after you’ve had the chance to set your assignment aside for at least an hour or two. Obviously, you’re down to the wire and will have to do each concurrently. Pay attention to detail and aim to fix glaring errors and mistakes you know you tend to make. You might miss something, but you want to think in terms of greater efficiency.
